July 4th Facts 
  • Independence Day was first celebrated in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776. 
  • There were an estimated 2.5 million people living in the newly independent nation in July 1776 - this year?  An estimated 313.9 million.  

 

  •  The Pennsylvania Evening Post is the first newspaper to print the Declaration of Independence on July 6, 1776.

 

  •  There is almost a 1 in 3 chance that the hot dogs and pork sausages consumed on the Fourth of July originated in Iowa.

 Check out these events:

  • Head to 2600 Benjamin Franklin Parkway to view the spectacular fireworks display above the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

 

  • Head to the Southampton Days Fair in Southampton, PA in Bucks County to enjoy an old-fashioned country fair, complete with fireworks display on the 4th.  The fair runs until the end of the week and includes craft tables, rides, games, music, and prizes.

 

  • Check out Newtown's First Fourth and Fireworks in Newtown, PA on July 7th, starting at 4:00pm.  Enjoy the parade through Newtown, Colonial encampment at the Newtown Middle School, and fireworks display.

 

  • History buffs will enjoy Fonthill's Old-Fashioned 4th of July Celebration at Fonthill Museum in Doylestown on July 4th, 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.  Experience an early 20th century July Fourth Celebration. Festivities include: a decorated bike parade, a town ball game (19th-century baseball), a watermelon eating contest, free old-time games, food and live music.
